DOERIAN

DURIAN

The Doerian is a tropical, green-yellow-brown "punk" fruit from Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, as big as a rugby ball full of fearsome spikes with a kind of large tangerine spikes inside, but of a totally different structure, without skin and with an orange-brown kernel in each particle. The structure looks a bit fleshy, but falls apart in your mouth, like creamy, greasy, firm, creamy pudding. The taste is sweet, sour and tongue tingly like a light sparkling wine. The taste is reminiscent of slightly fermenting banana, others recognize almond in it, sometimes onion and garlic. But most famous is the Doerian for its pungent and for some nauseating smell. It smells a bit like you left the gas open. The more mature, the more penetrating. And it also differs per variety.

Cooking with fruit and more

Did you know that..

You can suck the doerian out of its fist or use it in ice cream, desserts, smoothies, etc. From a whole fruit you have about 15% to 30% flesh left.
You can keep the segments for another day or two, of course airtight in the refrigerator (you'll probably want to throw away the container afterwards). Freezing can also be done, in fact the fruits are always imported frozen. The seeds can't be eaten raw, but roasted they seem to be tasty..
